Before there was liquid eyeliner, threaded eyebrows, and a plethora of products to reduce the time between “I woke up like this” and “devastatingly gorgeous”, our mothers and their mothers had a few tricks up their sleeves to help them put on their best face. Classic and timeless, these beauty hacks and tips are still useful today, whether you need a creative solution to tighten your skin or a more efficient beauty regimen to get your skin ready for a wedding.
1. Ease Puffy Eyes
Did that cram session leave you with puffy circles under your eyes? Living a modern lifestyle involves a modicum of stress that leaves our eyes feeling and looking saggy and tired. An age-old method to reducing swelling under your eyes is tea bags. Steep two tea bags in hot water for a few minutes, then place them in the refrigerator until cold. Squeeze out the liquid and place a tea bag on each eye, lay back and relax. In 10 minutes, remove the tea bags. Those puffy eyes should look less swollen and feel much better.
2. Smoother Lip and Eyeliner
When applying lip or eyeliner, you may want a nice, uninterrupted bold line, but that’s seldom what happens as you glide a pencil underneath the edges of your eyelids. For such a sensitive place, it’s important to get it right on the first application. To achieve this bold line more easily, grab a lighter and pass the tip of your eyeliner through the flame a few times. Blow on the eyeliner so it cools a bit, then run it along your eyelid quickly for a smooth, bold line.
3. Quick-Dry Fingernails
The first coat of nail polish goes on smoothly and dries quickly, as per usual. The second coat, the coat that makes the polish color pop the most, is the one that takes forever to dry. If you need to use your hands sooner than never, try dipping your fingertips into a bowl of ice water for about 20 seconds.
4. Natural Toner
Most of us use toner to make our pores look small, and to have that overall clean feeling after removing makeup or when we’re just waking up. Few of us know that the acidity in apple cider vinegar dries out active pimples, evens skin and gives you that clean feeling better than most store-bought toners. To make your own, mix one part apple cider vinegar with four parts of water and apply with a cotton ball. If you desire a stronger solution, try a half-and-half mix of ACV and water.
5. Soft, Shiny Hair
Instead of believing every shampoo or conditioner bottle that promises to give you softer, shinier hair, go look in your kitchen pantry for some olive oil. Olive oil is full of fatty acids that protect your hair at the follicle level from damage. Heat up a half cup of olive oil in the microwave for 10 seconds and use it like a hot oil treatment. Generously apply to your hair and scalp and leave it in for 20 minutes. Wash and condition like normal. Once dry, you’ll notice your hair is much softer and shinier.
6. Wake-Up Call
This one’s a real throwback. If every morning is a struggle to get your skin ready for the day, try a technique made famous in the movie Mommy Dearest. Get a big bowl and fill it with ice cold water and ice cubes. Take a deep breath, lower your face into the bowl, and hold for about 10 seconds. An instant wake-up call, the ice cold water temporarily constricts blood flow and tightens pores and skin.
7. Dry Lips and Skin
You don’t have to depend on a whole bunch of moisturizers for your face and lips. Again, head to the kitchen pantry, only this time, pull out some sugar to go with that olive oil. Organic ingredients are always best, but regular granulated sugar can make a great exfoliant due to its natural ability to keep things hydrated. Mix two parts sugar with one part olive oil (coconut oil works too), and gently rub on your face and lips. Rinse with warm water, and bask in the softness of your own face.
8. Heated Eyelash Curler
Much like your curling iron makes putting bouncy curls in your hair easier than cold rollers, an eyelash curler can give your eyelashes a curvature that holds mascara better. If your eyelashes are naturally straight or curl-resistant, try heating your eyelash curler with a blow dryer for a few seconds. Let cool for a little bit, then press your eyelashes between the clamps.
9. Pimple Appearance
When you’re heading out for an evening, the last thing you want is a big red pimple that fights through your makeup to be seen. While it certainly won’t make the pimple any smaller, Visine will take the red out of it! Squirt some Visine out on a cotton ball and hold it on your pimple for a few minutes. The vasoconstrictive properties in Visine that reduces eye redness will work on your zit too, reducing its raw, red appearance.
10. Soothe a Sunburn
Yeah, yeah, aloe vera is a good remedy for helping a sunburn, but an even better alternative is half an avocado. Avocados are full of antioxidants and monounsaturated fats that soothe sunburns, reduce irritation, and help restore your supple skin’s moisture. Simply mash a whole or half avocado up, and spread it evenly across your skin. Leave on for about a half hour and then rinse with warm water.
11. Natural Highlights
While it only works best on lighter brunettes and blondes, fresh lemon juice is a great way to naturally lighten hair. The citric acid opens up hair follicles and allows UV rays to reach it, lightening your hair from the roots. Juice four lemons and mix with ⅓ cup of water. Place in a spray bottle and spray evenly on unwashed hair, then sit in the sun for an hour. Wash and condition like normal. Repeat this regimen once weekly until your hair has reached the shade you want.
These beauty hacks and tips stand the test of time because they still work. While there are many products available that achieve the same end results, it can be comforting to know that you can always concoct your own face scrub, or shave minutes off your beauty regimen by visiting your kitchen pantry.
